Heartbreaking: Female student found dead in fifth suspected suicide from same university in past six months

Elsa Scaburri, 21, a third year student, died at her home near Salisbury earlier this month

A female student has been found dead in a suspected suicide in what is believed to be the fifth from the same university in the past six months.

Elsa Scaburri, 21, a third year student, died at her home near Salisbury earlier this month.

Her family believe Elsa, a student at Bristol University, took her own life, the Bristol Post reports.

Elsa was half way through a year abroad as part of her French and Italian degree.

She is the fifth student from the university thought to have committed suicide since the beginning of the academic year.

It is understood the 21-year-old went home at Christmas and had not returned to her studies since.

A spokesman for the university said: “We were very saddened to hear that one of our third-year students, Elsa Scaburri, sadly died near her home last week.

“We understand from her family that Elsa took her own life, although it will be for the coroner to determine the cause of death.

“The university offers its condolences to her family and friends and our thoughts are with them at this very sad time.

“The welfare of our students and staff continues to be our highest priority and it is distressing for all members of the university community that one of our students has died.

“We would urge any students affected by this tragic incident to seek support from university services, friends or family.”

According to her social media accounts, Elsa attended Peter Symonds Sixth Form College and Burgate School, both in Hampshire, and was recently studying in Italy.

Kim Long

An inquest in Salisbury, Wiltshire, heard last week how she was discovered at a farm in Bowerchalke, a village close to the Dorset and Hampshire boundaries on March 3.

She was later identified by her father Paolo, and her inquest was adjourned to a date to be fixed.

As previously reported by the Bristol Post, a review was launched by Bristol University into its support services for students with mental health problems earlier this year.

Three of the students – philosophy student Miranda Williams, 19, history student Daniel Green, 18, who was reportedly found dead on October 21 and Kim Long, an 18-year-old law student - were freshers and had just entered their first term at the university.

Lara Nosiru

Lara Nosiru, 23, a final-year student studying neuroscience, was found dead at the bottom of the Avon Gorge in January.

Daniel took his own life after breaking up with his girlfriend, and Kim committed suicide, leaving a note for his parents.

Inquests are yet to take place looking into the deaths of Miranda and Lara.

“In the context of increasing national concerns about student mental health we have been working with our staff and students to review how best to support all students' including those with enduring mental health difficulties,” the spokesman for the university added.
